Let’s get one thing straight right out of the gate:

this is not a post about “toxic positivity.”

If you’ve lived with a chronic condition for any length of time, you’ve likely had your fill of well-meaning advice telling you to “just think positive,” drink more water, do some yoga, or practice gratitude until your symptoms magically disappear. That’s not alchemy, that’s straight up denial.

Real emotional alchemy isn’t about denying your pain, ignoring a brutal flare-up, or pretending that sitting in an infusion chair is a luxury spa day. It’s about taking the raw, uncomfortable, messy reality of what you are experiencing and asking a much more radical question:

“Now that this has happened, how do I build a life of fierce, undeniable joy anyway?”

Alchemizing pain into power is a practice, an art form, and—quite frankly—a superpower that the able-bodied world rarely gets to see. Here is how we start turning that lead into gold.

Stop fighting the reality of What Is

Despite how similar they seem, there is a vast difference between pain and suffering. Pain is the physical or emotional sensation—the fatigue, the joint ache, the grief of a canceled plan. Suffering is the mental war we wage against it (“Why is this happening today? I shouldn’t be feeling this way. I’m failing.”).

When you fight with your current circumstances, you just end up defeated and with double the fatigue.

Alchemizing your pain starts with radical acceptance. Accepting a hard body day doesn’t mean giving up; it means dropping the anchor. When you stop expending all your vital energy fighting the fact that you’re in pain, you instantly reclaim that energy to help yourself through it.

Shift from “What is my body taking from me?” to “What is it teaching me?”

When pain takes center stage, it’s easy to feel like your body is a battleground or an unreliable narrator. But chronic illness forces an intensity of self-awareness that most people spend a lifetime trying to cultivate.

Pain teaches you:

  • Unapologetic Boundaries: You learn to say “no” to things that drain you because your energy budget literally demands it.
  • Deep Intuition: You become hyper-attuned to the subtle signals your body gives you long before a total crash happens.
  • Presence: You learn to savor the good hours, the cozy blankets, and the small sparks of joy with a level of gratitude that others can take for granted.

Your pain strips away the superficial noise and leaves you with an ironclad sense of what actually matters.

Re-write the narrative: you are the author, not the symptom log

It’s easy for a medical diagnosis to turn your life into a series of clinical data points—pain scales, blood draws, appointment calendars, symptom trackers, oh my.

While paying attention to your body is necessary, your mindset doesn’t have to be defined by a chart. You are not just a patient managing a condition; you are a human being curating a life.

  • The Lead: “I am stuck in bed again today, useless.”
  • The Gold: “My body requires deep rest today. I am choosing to honor that need without guilt, and I am using this quiet time to nourish my mind.”

Notice the shift in energy. In the “gold,”, you aren’t a victim of your schedule—you are the conscious decision-maker protecting your peace, and that really makes a difference.

Notice the “Micro-Joys” like your life depends on it

Power isn’t just about endurance and unmatched resolve; it’s about unfiltered delight. When your world shrinks due to health limitations, your capacity to find joy in the microscopic details MUST expand.

Alchemy is finding a spark of magic in a warm cup of coffee, the perfect pair of cozy slippers, a genuinely hilarious conversation with a friend, or three uninterrupted hours with a good book (or much needed nap) while an IV does its work. Joy doesn’t have to wait for a full cure or a “perfect health day.” You are allowed to experience vibrant, chaotic, deep joy right now, in this exact body, exactly as you are.

The Takeaway: your pain makes you formidable

You didn’t ask for the hard days, the flares, or the medical hurdles. You don’t have to be grateful for the pain itself, but you can be fiercely proud of the wisdom, resilience, and softness you’ve built because of it.

The next time you find yourself sitting in a doctor’s office, resting on the couch while the world rushes by, or navigating a tough day, remember this:

You are not broken. You are an experienced alchemist in progress.

So dear Readers, I would love to hear from you as I continue to evaluate and re-evaluate my own personal trials and tribulations in an attempt to alchemize them into something better. What is one small way you’ve turned hard circumstances into personal power recently?

We are always in this together and you are never, ever alone. Thank you for remaining Chronically Joyful with me. ♡
